Biscuits & Gravy Saturday

Don't you love Saturdays?

Saturday is the only day of the week that I get off to be with my family. It is the only day of the week my family has time to cook and eat biscuits and gravy. Saturday is the only day of the week many of you have time to look around for something new. I want Christian Gravy to honor the day with suggestions of things that I like that may be of some benefit to you. I will suggest music (both Christian and secular), books, other blogs, things to do for pleasure, the best bred of dog, great coffee beans...I believe you get.

When my best friend and I get together, we are "youtubers" (A youtuber is someone who will watch clip after clip on Youtube). Our wives gaze at us in amazement and try to come across as irritated, but I translate their fiery glazes as them thinking we are cute. One band that he introduced me to is Boyce Avenue. Boyce Avenue writes their own music, but what tantalizes me are their covers.

The band does covers in all different genres of music. I love them all (even the country music songs). In high school, I loved country music so much that some people called me "Big Country", and not in reference to my overwhelming physical presence. Something happened to my taste in music (I guess I was saved or something) and now I can't stand to hear country music. Every time I do my ears bleed and I throw up a little in my mouth. But Boyce Avenue can take a Taylor Swift song and make it bearable (was that "Mean"?).

The band takes other artist's original work and then transform it into something better. As you can only imagine, they catch a lot of flack for it. They get a lot of "haters" bashing them for not being original. However, they are something better than original...they are FRESH.

Christian, don't attempt to be original, but rather be fresh. You can't do, say, or be anything that is original to this world, but you can be fresh. You are called to be like Christ and to imitate other hero's in faith. The church doesn't need to be original (it has been since the death of Christ), what the church needs to be today is fresh.

So spend some time listening to Boyce Avenue today if that song tickled your ear. If it caused your ear to bleed, just get a wet Q-tip...but make sure you do not hit your ear drum.
