This sign marked an aisle in a grocery store in the mountains of North Carolina. The grocery store is a well-known chain.
What caught my eye was the label "New Age Drinks". The store knew that people were looking for something.
I wondered if they had a "Christian Drink" section.
So I walked to the grape juices. Nothing. I strolled to the wines. Nothing.
Brace yourself for this next one. I took a gander in the coffee...nothing.
So I wanted to see what a "New Age Drink" looked like.
There were a lot of cokes, Snapples, and other drinks that you find in any grocery beverage aisle. (Perhaps, it was the coconut water, because no one really likes that junk.)
There wasn't a clearly marked "New Age" beverage to be found.
The grocery store was marketing a religion (or a spiritual practice if you prefer), which they are free to do. However, they weren't clearly displaying the product. But it might as well have said puppies on that sign, because I didn't see any.
What struck me is that people are thirsty for something spiritually life changing.
They are so thirsty that they will even look to grocery stores to quench it. But since nothing is clearly marked, they will stay thirsty.
This reminds me of a conversation that Jesus had a with a slutty, non-Jewish, religious woman over a cup of water. (You can read the encounter in John 4). But Jesus clearly marked what he was offering (eternal life). And he even came straight out and told her that he was the messiah.
Jesus is the only person that can quench our thirst. People will not find it in any other religion, spiritual practice, or ideology. Yes, that is offensive, but it's the gospel.
Don't be afraid to have conversations with people who are thirsty for the truth. Be bold and look for opportunities to offer them the living water.
Question:
What the heck is a "New Age" drink?
