Bathroom Commandment-Thou Shalt Not Drink Toilet Water
This was in a restroom.
I did my business and didn't notice the sign, until some guy started to tell every stranger in the place.
You know that awkward moment when a stranger talks to you in the bathroom. A talking stranger is a much worse infraction than failing to provide a courtesy flush.
He broke so many rules it wasn't funny. Unlike women, men aren't allowed to talk to one another around the porcelain.
The rule is anyone willing to talk to a stranger in the bathroom is crazy. Some environments aren't conducive to build new friendships. And the captive audience doesn't appreciate it.
But do you know why that sign is posted on the wall?
At some point someone drank toilet water.
Yes, it is common sense to most people not to drink out of the potty.
We learn that at a young age when our parents freak out if we put things in the potty. We know not to put toys, brothers, cats, or body parts in the water. To this day, I'm bathing in Ajax if clean toilet water touches skin.
Apparently, some people missed out on Potty Training 101.
People can be stupid or, if not stupid, they can miss the obvious.
That's okay. We all miss the obvious sometimes.
That sign is a whole lot like the Big 10, not the collegiate sport conference, but the 10 Commandments.
Most of the rules are...well...obvious.
Like who doesn't know not to steal, murder, commit adultery, lie, or covet other people's possessions?
Aren't those commandments obvious?
However, we break them every single day. That's why God had to give them to us.
And I'm not just talking about the sinners who don't go to church. Good, righteous, holy, blameless people fail to obey obvious laws.
We all fail to love God and to love others.
We all drink the toilet water.
The Bible is full of laws and rules. Some are obvious, while others aren't.
Like did you know it was a sin for a Jew to cook a baby goat in its mother's milk? I bet you haven't done that lately. So you can look at yourself in the mirror and feel pretty darn good about yourself.
Christian, you are going to sin a whole lot this year. What's important is you understand that it isn't by what you do or don't do that earns you grace, but it's what Jesus did.
Just don't go around filling up your Nalgene bottles in porcelain thrones.
Question:
How do you cope when you miss the obvious?
