I Don't Want to Be Conservative Anymore

There is no greater joy in life than being a Conservative Christian. It automatically makes you better than everyone else.

When Jesus prayed that his father's will be done on earth as it is in heaven, scholars agree that he was referencing being a Conservative Christian.

Okay, so that's a major stretch.

Do you consider yourself a Conservative Christian?

Someone who holds fast to traditional attitudes and values when it comes to your faith? Are you reluctant to change? Do innovative churches bother you?

Look up the word "conservative" in a dictionary, if you are a Conservative Christian you won't like what you read. Whatever you do, don't look up the word "liberal" because it's pretty much the definition of awesome.

When it comes to being a Christian, I've always taken pride in being conservative. However, if you read your Bible (like all true Conservative Christians do) it will force you to do something that you don't like...it will challenge you to change.

And sometimes that means changing your faith, your views, and your attitudes.

This is why I don't want to be conservative anymore.

Jesus wasn't a conservative when it came to theology.

If he was, then he would have died from old age or drinking water that a donkey had defecated in. Jesus wouldn't have been hanged on a tree, if he was hanging out with the Conservatives. Nice word play?

He wasn't a liberal either.

He was radical.

In the most famous sermon of all time, The Sermon on the Mount, Jesus made a bold move. Jesus made six statements that followed this pattern, "You have it heard it said _____________, but I tell you _____________."

All six "You have heard it said..." statements were found in Scripture. They are what the "Conservative Jews" followed. They held fast to those things. Any Jew who didn't follow them, they were ready to stone. It's funny how we, Conservative Christians, are good at that too.

But Jesus is radical. So what does he do? He challenges their view of Scripture. He changes the game. He added something to each of the six statements. There were Conservative Jews there that day who got upset that he was messing with Moses' words.

Jesus was crucified, because he was bringing about change. The Conservatives hated him for it.

Christian, especially those of us in the Bible Belt, we need to be less conservative in the faith these days. Strive to be less conservative-like and be more Christlike.

Pray that God will change your heart. As you read God's word, pray that your ears and heart are opened to hear what the Spirit is really trying to teach you. If you do, change will come.
