Sunday Trendiest

There are two types of churches when it comes to clothing.

No church is able to escape the fashion label. No matter how they try to spin it, they always end up in one of these two camps. So let's pop some tags on this matter.

There's "Sunday Best" and there's "Sunday Trendiest".

Sunday Best churches know it and don't try to hide it. This can be respected. If you go to a Sunday Best church in jeans and screen print t-shirt, you'll feel more out of place than a King James Christian at a Starbucks buying a venti skinny hazelnut macchiatto.

It's the other side that we need to examine. 

People at Sunday Trendiest churches use this as a selling point when inviting someone to church. You tell people, "Just come as you are. You can wear blue jeans and a t-shirt."

However, what they won't tell you is that you will spend longer deciding what to wear. Women make their husbands even later to church because they have to post a selfie on Instagram with #goingtochurchjustasIam #daughteroftheking #dothesecrossbluejeansmakemybuttlookbig. 

I go to a Sunday Trendiest church. People are encouraged to come as they are, which for 97% of people includes blue jeans. I have been on staff at Sunday Best churches before. And guess what? It takes me longer to choose what to wear at a Sunday Trendiest church.

Times it by ten if I'm playing in the worship band.

Our worship leader sends out the schedule weeks in advance not so we can practice, but so that we can begin planning our outfits. This was apparent when last Sunday every person in the band had practically the same trendy outfit on but one. (I'm sorry to say that I wasn't the Lone Ranger.)

So how do Sunday Trendiest dress? That is largely decided upon geographical location. Christians in the Southeast will not dress like those of the Northwest. Mostly because we correctly believe that a v-neck can be too deep and that skinny jeans should only be worn by females.

However, there are some safe bets.

Shoes: Toms, Chucks, Sanuks, or flip-flops
Pants: Jeans or cargo
Shirt: V-Neck, plaid design with rolled up sleeves, or obscure screen print t-shirt
Hats: driver hats, train conductor caps, truck driver hat (hats dealing with transportation)
Accessories: Big watch, silicone bracelet, and/or three leather bracelets

Of course, sometimes in a Sunday Trendiest church Justin Timberlake's influence is great and people wear a suit and tie to be ironic.
