Yesterday, you were so close to God. Why does the Sunday hangover have to be so brutal?
Yesterday, you woke up. You put on your Sunday best. If you thought, "Not at my church. People come as they are." Then you put on your Sunday trendiest. Because chances are you didn't wake up and come to church wearing your pj's, messy hair, and with yo breath stankin'. Well, unless you are a worship pastor and then your hair was messy.
What happened this morning?
You woke up tired. You woke up not wanting to go to work. You woke up late.
For me that usually means I miss out on reading my Bible and praying. Which can be a bad thing for a recovering legalist.
Praying in the shower is legit. So I get that check mark and God gives me a gold star.
But God is up in heaven with his clipboard, staring at a blank space beside, "Read My Word" and it isn't checked.
Guilt overcomes me.
Missing a day of Bible study will almost guarantee that I fall out of favor with God. I'm beginning to backslid. Next thing you know, I'll be on meth, carrying a piece (instead of having it), and living on streets with a semi-cool nickname.
You don't want to know what will happen, if you miss two days in row.
However, we live in the age of social media. Twitter and Facebook took my guilt away.
You don't have to feel guilty any longer, if you miss a day reading the Bible. Now you can pray in the shower and check your social media feeds and you will inevitably spend time reading God's word.
If you are anything like me, you skip the Scripture posts. Instead you go on to see a picture of a rooster pouring coffee or of Obama shooting a gun. Don't skip the Scripture, it counts!
God is up in heaven with his clipboard and has to check, "Read My Word." You get God on a technicality. He has to give you a gold star. Now I can face my day without the guilt of feeling like I let God down.
You have to be careful implementing this strategy though. Because if you don't share and like those Jesus pictures where it say, "If you love Jesus then share." Then God will be like, "Why don't you love my son?" Jesus is up in heaven saying, "I said, if you love me that you will pass a picture of me on Facebook."
Perhaps God is okay with you missing a day and not sharing and liking those pictures.
Maybe God loves you and doesn't expect us to do things just to check them off of a list.
Maybe, just maybe, we should spend time reading the Bible and praying because we want to steal a few intimate moments with God. A God who is always near to you and even inside of you.
Question:
Do you skip the Scripture posts on Facebook and Twitter?
