So instead of tonight, it will be tomorrow evening.
When my wife and I told our oldest daughter this, she fell apart. Because that's what first graders do when they think Halloween has been canceled. After that we decided it was best not to tell her little sister who is already a Ball of emotions. (Get it "Ball"?)
Ellie Grace has been looking forward to Halloween for a month. She's dressing as her favorite princess, Aurora.
Some of you who aren't as into the princess world as I am might know her as Sleeping Beauty. (If that sounds snotty, it's supposed to.)
She wasn't being a brat. She was truly disappointed and the whole rescheduling Halloween thing confused her. How do you reschedule a holiday?
Once we calmed her down, we explained what it meant.
It's also her Nana's birthday today. (You'd think a mother-in-law with a Halloween birthday would be scary, but it's not.)
We explained how we were going to be able to celebrate Nana's birthday for the first time instead of having to trick or treat.
Her demeanor changed.
She quit crying.
The focus shifted from not trick or treating to celebrating something with someone she loved.
She wanted to immediately get started on her birthday card.
Life will disappoint you.
When it does, learn from a six year old.
Don't dwell on the disappointment. Shift your focus onto something else that you love.
Your attitude will soon change.
What do you do when you're disappointed?
