Well...probably not.
If there was one day in all of scripture difficult to take in, the day after Good Friday would be it.
Can you imagine how difficult it was for Jesus' followers?
Here they were; they had met the Messiah. They had followed the Son of God for three years. He was the one they had all been waiting for.
And he was gone.
To make matters worse it was Saturday.
It was the Sabbath and they couldn't travel home.
Have you ever met unexpected tragedy?
If you have, you know the one place you want to be is home.
Not to mention the grief and heart break they felt. They loved Jesus. Jesus loved them. He washed their feet less than 48 hours ago. One of their own betrayed Jesus. (I bet Judas had a nasty toe fungus.) However, he committed suicide and he was gone too. This had to anger the disciples.
The day after someone dies is always more difficult. The first day there is shock. The second day reality sinks in. That reality sucked for the disciples.
Their guide in all things life for the past three years was dead. Their dreams gone. Their expectations blown. The miracles and teachings were a thing of the past. They were useless.
Friday was tough for the people who cared about Jesus, but Saturday was brutal.
They were lost, lonely, and left wondering what was next.
Talk about a crushing 24 hours!
Day two of three was necessary though. God always does some of his best work, while we are left waiting in seemingly hopeless situations.
However, Sunday was coming.
When they woke up the next day, everything would change forever.
Saturday's readings:
- Job 14:1-14,
- Psalm 31:1-4, 15-16,
- 1 Peter 4:1-18,
- and John 19:38-42.
