If you don't, you should. It's in the Bible somewhere. Well, you should read it in a little while because right now you actually can't. Jon Acuff recently left Dave Ramsey's team and his blog is down while they turn it back over to him.
His blog is what inspired Christian Gravy.
I didn't even know satire about the Christian subculture was possible until I heard him in an interview.
One of the greatest compliments I've gotten recently is when someone called me "Little Jon Acuff".
I've always said (more like prayed) that my writing is the love child of Jon Acuff and Donald Miller. While that would be one hideous baby, that would be life-changing reading.
His books have propelled and pushed me forward.
So much that once we were at Disney at the same time and I carried his book Quitter with me just in case we ran into each other. (Unfortunately, we didn't and my dream of meeting him in the shadow of the castle didn't play out. That's why there isn't a photo with this post. Sorry, things got just weird.)
I wake up every morning and after my quiet time, I log on to his SCL to see his most recent post. I've missed that these last few weeks.
So here are eight things I miss about Stuff Christians Like:
1) The community. People comment on his blog like crazy. Great conversations happen because of his thoughts. And not just Christians comment and engage in the conversation.
2) The worship pastor jokes. Have you noticed how worship pastors are starting to get cocky without SCL to keep them humble? Without SCL to keep worship pastors accountable, they will run amuck. It was Mr. Acuff who brought to light the folly of the worship pastors wardrobe and the attitude that makes them unique.
3) He says what no one else will say. And when he doesn't actually say it, you know what he's saying. You know the elephant in the room? He likes to point it out. He isn't afraid to ruffle some feathers. But it's clear that he loves Jesus, the church, and other Christians.
4) He's an encourager. He is always promoting or encouraging someone else.
5) Indie music guru. Acuff knows good music. He has introduced me to The Lone Bellow and Seryn. This guy is could write the Hipsters Guide to Indie Music.
6) Holy laughter. SCL is hilarious. Christians need to learn to laugh at ourselves. We do some ridiculous things.
7) Life advice. While most of his posts are comical, he does write serious posts as well. They are full of life advice. One of the most important things he's taught me is how to deal with a critic.
8) Jesus jukes. He discovered and named the Jesus Juke. A Jesus juke is when someone says something and someone turns it around to be about Jesus. This is sometimes used to shame someone. While this isn't a new phenomena, his discovery is like Columbus finding the Americas.
So while Jon will hopefully return to blogging soon, I just wanted to thank him for his work and what it has meant to me.
